چکیده
The biological variables consist of a single population each of phytoplankton and grazers, which are denominated in phosphorus units (mmol m23) in the constant (Redfield) ratio model (CRM) and are given the symbols Pp and Pz. In the variable ratio model (VRM), there are separate state variables for phytoplankton carbon (Cp), nitrogen (Np), phosphorus (Pp), and chlorophyll (M). Grazer biomass is assumed to be in Redfield ratio, in phosphorus units as in the CRM. In each model there are additional biogeochemical state variables dissolved inorganic carbon (Ci), nitrogen (Ni), and phosphorus (Pi), dissolved oxygen (O2), and two pools each of dissolved organic carbon (C1, C2), nitrogen (N1, N2), and phosphorus (P1, P2). The Redfield ratios are the given the symbols RCN, RCP, and RNP and the standard values of 106 : 16 : 1. A complete listing of the model parameters is given in Table 1. In the CRM the phytoplankton equation is

Biogeochemical cycling in the oligotrophic ocean: Redfield and non-Redfield models
The assumption of fixed elemental ratios in ocean biogeochemical models was tested using the Hawaii Ocean Time-Series data set from the subtropical North Pacific Ocean, where nutrient-starvation is a permanent condition for near-surface phytoplankton populations. Two three-element (C, N, P) ecosystem models were coupled to a mixed-layer model, an inorganic carbon chemistry model, and dynamic po...
متن کاملScale-dependent carbon : nitrogen : phosphorus seston stoichiometry in marine and freshwaters
The classical Redfield ratio of carbon106 : nitrogen16 : phosphorus1 is a cornerstone of biogeochemistry. With the use of .2,000 observations of the chemistry of particulate matter from small and large lakes, as well as nearand off-shore marine environments, we found that the best model to describe seston stoichiometry depended on the scale of analysis. We also found that there were better esti...
متن کاملMagnitude of oceanic nitrogen fixation influenced by the nutrient uptake ratio of phytoplankton
The elemental stoichiometry of sea water and particulate organic matter is remarkably similar. This observation led Redfield to hypothesize that the oceanic ratio of nitrate to phosphate is controlled by the remineralization of phytoplankton biomass1. The Redfield ratio is used universally to quantitatively link the marine nitrogen and phosphorus cycles in numerous biogeochemical applications2–...
متن کاملTemporal trends in deep ocean Redfield ratios.
The Redfield ratio [carbon:nitrogen:phosphorus (C:N:P)] of particle flux to the deep ocean is a key factor in marine biogeochemical cycling. Changes in oceanic carbon sequestration have been linked to variations in the Redfield ratio on geological time scales, but this ratio generally is assumed to be constant with time in the modern ocean. However, deep-water Redfield ratios in the northern he...
متن کاملOn the influence of “non-Redfield” dissolved organic nutrient dynamics on the spatial distribution of N2 fixation and the size of the marine fixed nitrogen inventory
Dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) and phosphorus (DOP) represent themost abundant formof their respective nutrient pool in the surface layer of the oligotrophic oceans and play an important role in nutrient cycling and productivity. Since DOP is generally more labile than DON, it provides additional P that may stimulate growth of nitrogen-fixing diazotrophs that supply fixed nitrogen to balance ...
